Fall Apple Picking 2024 (Highland, NY)

On the morning of Saturday, October 12th, eleven families gathered for apple picking at Dubois Farm in Highland, New York. Event organizer Kit Fraser began by welcoming the group and introducing Torri Ann, a guest from the University of Connecticut’s HELLO Lab.

HELLO Lab created educational content for the event in the form of an illustrated booklet containing a recipe for apple sauce along with relevant language tips and ASL vocab. Torri addressed the group and provided some information about HELLO Lab. Each family was given a bag for apple picking with the recipe booklet, and a gift certificate to Dubois Farms to cover the cost of apples or other goods from the farm store.

The families then made their way to the tractor for a hayride around Dubois Farm before heading off into the orchards to pick apples together. After filling their bags, the families gathered once more by the Farm’s playground where they could chat and enjoy cider, donuts, and apples covered by their gift cards. Some families walked to the farmyard to meet the animals that lived there too – goats, alpaca, and more!

Weather was perfect! All communication modes were welcomed and ASL interpretation was provided.

Event sponsored by the New York State Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program (NY EHDI).
